This year Let’s Mix (a DJ competition and mix hosting site) has shut up business due to issues with their business model. It seems that the logistics of enforcing restrictions on the mixes uploaded has made it impossible to run. The owners claim this isn’t a result of copyright related issues and no doubt is a result of server costs outstripping income. At least Mixcloud lives on! And as one site closes a new DJ/producer orientated site opens…
Beatport has recently announced the launch of Beatport Play, a new remix contest platform. Beatport Play allows DJs and producers to use remix parts from original tracks by some of Beatport’s biggest artists to enter contests or simply use them in their own performances. All the samples look free at the moment which is great news for potential remix artists.
Five contests are currently available at www.play.beatport.com. Launch sponsors include Pioneer, Ableton, Novation, Odyssey, and iZotope. In addition to having their winning remix released commercially, winners will receive prize packages including audio production gear and software. Here’s the list of current remix competitions for you to get your teeth into…
- Beck & Charlotte Gainsbourg “Paradisco” (Because Music)
- Chuckie “What Happens In Vegas” (CR2/Big Beat)
- Steve Aoki “Ladi Dadi” (Ultra)
- Christian Smith “Indecent Exposure” (Tronic)
- Bingo Players “Rattle” (Hysteria)
Almost a hundred remixes have appeared within a matter of hours of the parts being available, most of which are unsurprisingly poor quality. Make sure you leave a break between creating your remix and uploading it. Listening with fresh ears can do wonders and make the difference between getting nowhere and getting your music played alongside some of the greats. Good luck!
